Board Match is a programme designed to match individuals with relevant expertise, skills and the commitment to help renew and strengthen the boards of charitable and other Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) in Singapore.
As Boards represent the leadership level of Charities/NPOs, Board Match enables qualified and skilled individuals to volunteer at this highest level of the social service sector. Participants will be contributing on a strategic level towards capacity and capability in Charities/NPOs, and ultimately, contributing toward a stronger society.
To understand how Board Match volunteering differs from other sorts of volunteer work, please see the Volun-Tier Pyramid below.

Many Board Match volunteers have also benefitted from the opportunity to network with a larger social and professional circle, while developing their personal and leadership skills. Of course, there is always that added satisfaction of supporting and strengthening the community.
It is termed based, typically for a period of 2 years.
Time Commitment
Depending on the NPO, board meetings may be held monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly.
We generally look for the following in Board Members:
-
At least 5 years of experience in a managerial position for Board positions, and at least 5 years of experience in an executive position for Committee positions
-
An interest and belief in the sector/cause of interest – relevant volunteering experience would be helpful
-
Proven track record in management expertise in areas such as but not limited to Accounting, Law, Engineering, Medicine, Fundraising, Public Relations and Marketing
-
Commitment to set aside time and networking resources – ideally at least a monthly commitment
-
Lateral thinking, critical thinking and analytical skills
-
Leadership and negotiation skills
Which sector may I volunteer in?
There are several sectors or causes you may select. They are Animal Welfare, Arts & Heritage, Children/Youth, Environment, Education, Family/Community, Elderly, Health, Disabled, Sports, and International Causes. If you have a specific cause that you are passionate about, please let us know and we will try to match you with a relevant organisation.
Based on your indicated skills and preferences, we will refer you to suitable NPOs that would benefit from your expertise. Once a potential match is found, the selection and appointment will take place in accordance with that NPO’s existing policies and practice. NPOs may recommend that interested individuals serve in a committee or sub-committee to gain exposure to the NPO before appointment to the board.
Testimonials from BM Volunteers
"I have been on the board of the DPA since April 2010 and my experience to date has been a highly rewarding one. It is rare to find an opportunity where one is both able to learn from like-minded peers working pro bono with regards to their respective expertise, and contribute by leveraging one's own strategic branding and management background. The CNPL staff took the time to understand my expertise, time that I could commit to, and exactly the kind of opportunity and environment that I was looking for, and match me with the DPA. I highly recommend any individual looking to contribute back to society by leveraging his or her professional knowledge to explore the programme."
(Mr Arsalan Ali - matched as Marketing/PR Board Member, Disabled People's Association)
” As a first-time volunteer, it has indeed been an enriching journey, thanks to CNPL's efforts in introducing me to HOME. There are a lot of positives that I have gained so far. Being directly involved in HOME's cause for humanitarian works, in this case to help mistreated migrant workers, meets my personal objective to contribute to the society. Interactions with the beneficiaries, donors, HOME's passionate and dedicated staff as well as other Board Members who have been long active in the charity works provide me with new perspectives. It has also been a great learning experience in applying my professional experience, which I mostly gained from large corporations, to an NPO of HOME's size."
